Hull Samba are delighted to announce that on Saturday 18th April we are hosting a prestigious ‘Escola de Bateria’ workshop, led by one of the UK’s leading Brazilian Percussionists, JP Courtney.

JP Courtney performs and arranges carnival and folk music from Cuba and Brazil, and leads several professional samba bands around the UK, including Toque Tambor, Ziguiridum and Nova Guarda. Last year, JP lead the Carnaval Transatlantico project, taking a group of UK based samba players to Rio to play at carnival.

With the support of Hull City Arts Department we are able to offer places on the workshop at a discounted rate of £20 waged and £10 for students/low waged/unwaged.

The Art Brasil workshop will be held on Saturday 18th April from 11am until 4pm at Fruit, Humber Street, Hull where we will be joined by players from other UK samba groups.

Participants in the ‘Escola de Bateria’ workshop will have the opportunity to learn several styles of samba, such as Funk, Ciranda and Coco. The workshop is run at a medium pace, and is aimed at people who already have experience playing samba or percussion.

For those who would like a taster of playing samba, Hull Samba meet every Tuesday evening from 7pm until 9pm at the Afro Caribbean Centre, Park Street, Hull. We welcome beginners and experienced players, and all instruments are provided.
